Gherty’s Zoo Report

The Zoo

We went to the Zoo De Martinique! It was awesome, and this is why. When we went to the zoo we saw some amazing animals. Three I will tell you about including the jaguar, the caiman, and the wallaby. I was so excited to see the jaguar, so I have to tell you some facts. Also, the caiman has an interesting fact that has to do with the jaguar. Then the wallaby well if you like kangaroos then you will like him. Now here’s the jaguar…

The Jaguar

jaguar

So, the jaguar is a big cat. I don’t mean he’s huge although he is, I mean that’s what he’s called. The jaguar is a carnivore, which mean he eats meat and he is a predator. They eat over 80 species including deer, pig, capybara, foxes, fish, frogs, and even large anaconda snakes. The jaguar is the 3rd biggest cat after the lion and the tiger. The male jaguar is bigger then the female. Jaguars average height is 4-6.5 feet. Their weight is between 124 and 211 pounds. Jaguars in the wild live for about 11-15 years but in captivity they live for about 20. Jaguars only live in South and North America. The jaguar scientific name is panthera onca. Now here’s the Caiman…

The Caiman

caimanThe caiman is an amphibious carnivore. It lays eggs and the female protects them. The largest is the black caiman up to 15 feet! Now the part that includes a jaguar. A jaguar snuck up on a caiman and attacked it and won. The thing was it was a black caiman. They are strong swimmers and feed on fish, birds, insects, and other animals. The caimans are in places of the amazon with fast flowing streams. They like the muddy places, so they can hide. They sneak up on their prey or wait for them to come up to the river. They have a few tricks up their sleeves. One being the log trick. Is it a log or caiman? Once the prey comes thinking it’s a log it strikes. They are strong swimmers, so they swim fast. Even though they are fast swimmers they usually miss. One thing that comes in handy is the fact that they don’t have to eat much. Their scientific name is caiman crocodilus. Now for the wallaby…

The Wallaby

wallabyThe wallaby is a marsupial which is animal with a pouch. The wallaby joey is born helpless, so it is immediately put in the pouch. When it is old enough to come out it will jump back in only when danger comes, or it wants a ride. They are herbivores meaning they will only eat plants. Like kangaroos, wallabies have a strong tail and back legs. They use the tail for holding themselves up when they kick. They balance on their tail in fighting each other and defense when predators come, and they are trapped. Otherwise they will run. They are very fast so usually they can get away. They are 12-41 in. while their tail is 10-29 inches. Their size is relative to a 6 ft. man. In the wild they live up to 9 years. They probably would live longer in captivity. Their scientific name is notamocrofus.

These are only three of the animals living in the Zoo De Martinique. Although I have said these animals live longer in captivity if you put all the animals in captivity they wouldn’t have anything special about them anymore. They would be lazy, fat, spoiled animals. So, when you go to the zoo you’re not seeing the same thing as you would see in the wild. These wonderful animals are what you could see in Zoo De Martinique. The first thing to do is go to Martinique! These animals are the three fallen!!!!!
